Everyone is looking for ways to make extra money. If you’re reading this post, it’s probably because you realize that in order to achieve financial freedom, you can’t afford to just work for money, you also have to make your money work for you. You can reach untold heights when you can actually use your money to make more money. This is not for the faint of heart, and the options available for that are not created equal.

Stock Trading Definition

To avoid getting overly technical, let’s just say that stock trading is the act of buying and selling company stocks and related financial products, with the objective of turning a profit. Stock trading relies on the principle of market timing. In keeping with the “let’s not get too technical” theme, market timing refers to the practice of attempting to forecast what direction a stock’s price is headed and positioning yourself to make money from it. There are a lots of techniques to do so, and the vast majority of them are fairly advanced, thus beyond the scope of this post. When correctly executed (at least in theory), these techniques offer insights on possible future price movements before they happen.

Stock Trading Risks

One of the most basic rules about stock trading is that there is no such thing as a transaction with no risk. And when you think about it, it can be argued that there is no situation with no risk – but I digress. There is always the chance that you will lose the money that you have invested. There is even the possibility of losing multiples of the money you have invested, but that’s (once again) beyond the scope of this post, since we’re referring to buying on margin. Don’t worry if you don’t know what it is, I will also cover it in a later post. So like I was saying, the risk of loss is very real, and it needs to be accounted for. The best way to decrease risk is to education and preparedness. Education means knowing what you’re doing and preparedness means putting yourself in a position to limit your losses if things don’t go as you planned.

Stock Trading Tips

If you’re going to trade stocks, then it is absolutely crucial that you build a diversified portfolio. I don’t even mean that you should trade different kinds of stocks, I mean that you should also be investing in ways that have nothing to do with buying and selling. You should have a plan for buying and holding, as well as investments in other investment vehicles such as bonds or real estate. Never be too concentrated, no matter how good a particular stock or sector looks at the moment. Diversification will help you if a certain stock or sector or asset class crashes so that you don’t lose everything.

While a lot of people hype up stock trading and tell you that it’s an easy way to make a lot of money in a short period of time, they might fail to tell you that it’s risky and that you need education and discipline to make money. You have to figure out which stock trading style best suits your financial resources and risk profile. Different stock trading strategies include fundamental trading, scalping, technical trading, day trading, momentum trading, and so on. You need to find out where your comfort zone is.

Try starting with a demo (or dummy) account to practice trading first via what is called “paper trading”, which simply means trading without any real money (this obviously used to be done on paper, hence the legacy name). It is a incredible learning opportunity and also works wonders as a reality check so you can know exactly where you stand: you get to practice trading and gain the experience and knowledge without having to invest any real money. There are lots of very helpful websites available on the web (including this one) to help guide you in the right direction.

There are many ways to learn how to trade stocks successfully. What stops a lot of people is that it requires willingness to learn and discipline in order to be successful, and what they were looking for was a quick and easy way to make money. Success will depend on how well you learn and how diligently you apply it.
